Running Gear
Just starting out?
This list is meant for those just starting to run or walk. The following are the minimums to adequately get you on your way. Feel free to ask any questions along the way.
SHOES - You really need to think of shoes as an investment. Many injuries can be avoided with properly fitting shoes. Consider traveling to a true running store for the proper fit. They will look at your foot and stride to determine the proper shoe for you. It really is worth the time and money to get the right shoe for you. Shoes should be replaced every 300-500 miles, depending on the type of training you are doing.
SOCKS - Cotton socks are not desirable. They soak up the sweat and become heavier. They also lead to friction and blisters. Look for true running socks that will wick moisture away from the foot and offer support for your arches as well.
SHORTS – You will want a few pairs of properly fitting shorts. Look for shorts that are made of some type of “sports” material. You will find a lot of “Dri-fit” type shorts on the market. Pick a style that is comfortable to you. Each manufacturer will have a different style, cut and feel.
SHIRTS – Again, you want to find those with “Dri-fit”, or similar technology. This will wick moisture from the body, while not getting heavier like most cotton t-shirts would. You will want to purchase at least one short sleeve and one long sleeve shirt.
PANTS or TIGHTS – For those cooler mornings and winter months, you will want a pair of pants at a minimum. Tights are built to add warmth, while offering proper support for your muscles. Pants will simply provide warmth and wind stoppage.
